Buyers Guide

The shoes on this page are far from your average sneakers/boots and carefully selected to cater to your retail needs. Therefore here is a guide to some of the advanced technologies you will find inside of them, that goes hand-in-hand with making your job a more pleasurable day-to-day experience.

As a quality guideline, for every $50 you spend you should get 6 months of hard usage out of the shoes.

Firstly, you should understand your shoe size, so there is more of a chance your new pair will fit correctly. One tip is to read through customer reviews, and also check seller descriptions for shoe specifications to find out if shoes you are interested in run large, small, thin, or wide.

Also, If you find a company that sizes well for your feet, keep them in mind for your next purchase, as this can minimize the risk of receiving a shoe that doesn't fit correctly.

A shank is a long and thin piece of material that sits in the midsole, traveling through the shoe under the arch of the foot. They are made of strong materials such as steel and their primary purpose is to provide added foot stability, playing a critical role in supporting walking form.

Although not essential for comfortable footwear, without a shank, the shoe will flex far more. This can be great for workouts, but for working in retail the additional support they provide will benefit standing, twisting, lifting, and moving all day.

Arch Support

The proper arch support will mimic the contours of your arches and help you to distribute pressure evenly throughout the feet.

Without proper arch support, you place additional pressure on two key areas of the foot - the ball and the heel area, and excess strain can occur. So, if you suffer from frequent sore feet and ankles, this could be an indicator to look for a working shoe with additional arch support.

Also, people with high arches and those with flat feet who overpronate as they walk will require arch support to offer proper alignment of the feet and stability inside of the shoe.

Ankle Support

For those twisting and turning frequently, carrying heavy packages from deliveries, or even jumping down off of step ladders, ankle support can mean the difference between ankle slips/twists or even worse. With this in mind, there are features that you can look out for to help protect them.

Understanding your shoe size for a glove-like fit should be considered. Next, a secured full lacing system and a padded tongue/collar will provide added security and stability. Also, shoes with a higher ankle design secure the ankle at a higher point, providing additional support and also protection from unnecessary knocks.

Heel Counter/Clip

Heels make the first contact to the floor when we walk. A plastic heel counter wraps around the heel of the foot, stabilizing the heel ensuring rearfoot support. You may also find shoes that use Airthotic heel clips, which provide stability alongside additional flexibility in the heel region.

Upper material

Made from animal hides, real leather provides a supple and supportive environment for the feet, adapting to your foot shape, and also naturally breathes. It also has natural water resistance and is easy to maintain with a quick wipe and a waterproofing spray if working in harsh conditions.

Oh, and it and also ages gracefully.

Mesh Fabric

Knit mesh fabric is a great material, often made with materials such as nylon and polyester. Given that most people won't want to work all day in heavy shoes, its lightweight properties can help to keep your feet comfortable. Also, it resists moisture build-up, and due to its open-hole structure, is breathable, allowing air to travel throughout the shoe.

For working on your feet many hours at a time, a combination of sturdy leather and breathable, lightweight mesh fabric can merge the best of both worlds for a pleasurable walking experience.

Synthetic Leather

Synthetic/faux leather is made from materials such as a combination of textiles and PU that are designed to mimic the look of the real thing, and are also an animal-friendly and cost-effective option.

Other benefits of this material are their ability to retain form, being robust and durable fending off scratches and scrapes throughout hard working days. They are generally water-resistant out of the box and naturally avoid staining and water damage, requiring less treatment than the real thing to retain form.

Inner Materials

Genuine Leather Lining

Being the number one choice for many, leather lining offers superior breathability and moisture absorption to other materials, being able to absorb 3x its weight in moisture. If you are prone to sweating with hot feet, then a genuine leather lining is a skin-friendly option to wear with or without socks.

Textile Lining

Textile lining is a material woven by threading. These include natural fabrics such as cotton, which are lightweight for comfort, and hypoallergenic to prevent skin irritation. They also include Nylon, which is a cost-effective option offering good insulation and durability, and Polyester that is flexible to the foot shape, lightweight, and durable.

However, textile linings may deteriorate faster than leather and can also become rather smelly over time, and need maintaining to avoid these things from happening.

COOLMAX lining

This special lining uses a unique combination of polyester fibers providing the best of both worlds.

On warmer days it enables a breathable interior, drawing moisture away from the skin through to the outer layer of the fabric that evaporates it quickly, and on cooler days it provides an insulative layer of fabric to keep the feet warm.

Aside from regular inserts providing basic underfoot support, there are some specifically designed for different purposes.

PORON XRD insoles offer a soft surface layer but harden on impact, which reduces and also absorbs 90% of the impact. They offer protection by counteracting foot fatigue.

SAS Cool Step

This insole provides an anti-bacterial foam footbed that is designed to wick moisture from the skin on the foot to prevent heat build-up and provides a firm surface of support under the heel area, and a softer experience under the forepart of the foot

Goga Mat

Skechers Goga Mat memory foam insoles provide a more resilient and springier base than their previous efforts, adjusting its hardness to cushion the user's activity levels.

Through infusing open-cell PU foam, combined with a proprietary aerogel. In other words, these insoles are very lightweight and designed to be highly insulative, keeping your feet warm in cooler weather conditions.

Here are some midsole technologies you may come across in a pair of work shoes suited to different departments of retail work.

UltraGO Foam

This foam cushioning is lightweight and think, and by putting ample space between the ground and the foot it is highly absorbent to the impacts of walking/running while also creating a rebound effect for energy return and a positive walking experience.

This cushioning is formed through a polyurethane mold. Ultra-lightweight EVA foam is then inserted into the center of the sole forming a highly strong and supportive base with a great ability to withstand stress compression and also stands the test of time.

Ecco Fluidform

This technology uses lightweight materials and transforms them into a hardened, sturdy and durable state, offering an anatomical and highly supportive, lightweight, and flexible underfoot experience.

Polyurethane midsoles are an environmentally friendly option that offer a balance of firmness and elasticity, making them a comfortable, affordable option. They are also resistant to wear and tear, hazardous chemicals, and are slip-proof.

Rubber is ideal for those who work in challenging environments. Often accompanied with a thick, patterned tread, you will have no problems walking on a variety of surfaces with rubber soles.

Rubber is naturally abrasion resistant and slip-proof to chemicals such as oil and water. It can also withstand high temperatures and is a good form of underfoot cushioning, making rubber ideal for those working in hazardous environments and on their feet for hours at a time.

Polyurethane soles are lighter, more flexible, and durable than rubber. These characteristics make PU soles a comfortable, easy-to-use option. They are also great for absorbing shock, offer water resistance, and decent slip resistance to hazardous chemicals.

So, If you are working in fast-paced non-hazardous environments and looking for a flexible and lightweight shoe, a PU sole may be the option for you.

Other Outsoles

Some Skechers models feature flex grooves on the outsole that allows for flexion across the metatarsophalangeal joints, easing potential underfoot strain. They also have contact points in key areas of the heel/forefoot to enable a natural walking gait.

Some companies offer advanced underfoot tread to prevent accidents such as slipping over, such as SAS Xtra Grip outsoles, made from sturdy rubber and a unique hexagon sole pattern designed to firmly grip slippery surfaces such as oil and water.

Working on your feet all day causes them to swell, and if there isn't enough room in the toes to freely move them around, you will soon be changing footwear! Some of the options I have chosen on this list have spacious toe boxes, and wide fits available to make sure this doesn't happen.

Soft Toe

For working on the shop floor, a soft toe shoe fits the bill perfectly. However, they will not prevent impact from heavy objects or other related crushing injuries.

Steel Toe

If you are working in the warehouse with heavy objects then a safety toe/steel toe is essential. They are designed to withstand a great amount of impact pressure from falling objects, or a forklift accidentally riding over your feet, for example.

Another thing to look out for if you are prone to knocking your toes is a PU mudguard that will provide a layer of protection against debris and knocks.

Additional Safety Features

If you work with heavy electrical equipment, you may need to consider protection against potential hazards.

Puncture Resistance

Some boots offer a built-in protective layer between the midsole and outsole, such as Kevlar penetration resistant soles, that prevent punctures from sharp and dangerous objects injuring your feet.

ESD Protection

If you are working in the retail warehouse or in other hazardous environments then you may want to look for boots with electrical dissipative properties. These boots are designed to release built-up static electricity directly into the floor, thus lessening the electrical impact between two electrically charged objects (your shoes and something else).

Additional Tips

  • Tie the laces in double knots to ensure the shoe stays fitting like a glove
  • Take care of your feet. You can powder them before work to prevent moisture build-up and unpleasant smells and sores from occurring
  • Use a shoe tree to maintain shoe form and to help air them out, and give them a quick brush-off and wipe every few days to prevent them from aging too fast
