Sean Connery Height (Was he The Tallest Bond?)

Sean Connery (1930-2020) was a hugely successful Scottish actor, often remembered for his 'posh Glasgow' voice and most importantly for introducing us to the fictional character 'James Bond', playing him in 7 films dating from (1962-1983).

Regarding his height, he was clearly over average, standing above the majority of his peers in movies and out and about in public. Even in his 80s, he appeared comfortably taller than the majority of people.

But how tall was he really, and was he the tallest actor to play 'James Bond'? This page will investigate these questions, and also compare his height during his prime years, to how tall he was as an older man.

What Was His Real Height?

Sean Connery experienced natural height loss during the last few decades of his life, and stood at 6'0.75" tall, which is still a tall man, and very tall for his age range. However, in his youth he stood around 1.25 inches taller at 6'2" (188 cm), being few inches taller than the character description of James Bond.

Height Listing

Google lists Sean Connery's height at 1.88m or 6'2" and weight as 75 kg (165 lbs).

Height Claims

Sean's height helped him score a job working as an extra (Guards Officer) on the film The Glorious Days (1962), with him mentioning his height - "I'm about six feet two inches". (1)

Other Mentions

In his youth Sean was often mentioned as 'Tommy', and in the book Sean Connery from 007 to Hollywood icon (2), Sean was referred to as a "tall—six feet two inches at eighteen"

Also, the book Sean Connery: A Celebration (3) states that Sean stood at "an impressive 6 foot 2 inches"

As shown above, Sean reached his adult height as a teenager, and it is generally accepted by Sean and other sources that his adult height was 6 feet 2.

Height Next to Celebs

Height Loss

Typically, we experience gradual height loss after the age of 40, and by 80 a man can expect to stand around 2 inches shorter. Sean, however, did very well in this regard, and only appeared to have lost around 1.25 inches of height from his peak years to his 80s, which is respectable.

Younger Years (Before Aged 60)

Rowan Atkinson 5'11.5" (181.6 cm) Prime Height

When Sean and Rowan starred together in the film Never Say Never (1983), when both wearing regular-looking footwear, Sean looks a comfortable 2.25 inches taller than Rowan throughout the movie.

So when next to Rowan, Sean looks to be 6'1.75" tall.

Kevin Costner 6'1" (188 cm) Prime Height

When Sean and Kevin starred together in the film The Untouchables (1987) Sean looks to be 1 inch taller than Costner throughout the movie. Also, at the premiere of the film, and other pictures I have seen there is a distinctive and consistent 1 inch height difference.

So with Kevin, Sean looks to be a comfortable 6'2" tall.

Later Years (After Aged 60)

Donald Trump 6'0.75" (184.8 cm) - Prime Height 6'1.75" (187.3 cm)

When Sean and Donald Trump (future American President) were pictured standing together at a fashion show in New York in 2010, they looked very similar in height. It really is harder to tell who is taller, and both men seem eye-to-eye height-wise.

Therefore, when Sean was in his 80s and standing next to Donald Trump, he appears 6'0.75" tall.

Andy Murray 6'2" (188.9 cm)

When a tipsy Sean Connery crashed Tennis sensation Andy Murray's U.S. Open men's semifinals victory press conference in 2012, his height held up well considering he was in his 80s. Standing side-by-side, he looks to be 1.25 inches shorter than Andy.

Therefore compared to Andy, Sean looks to be 6'0.75" tall.

The Results - Although there is limited photo evidence from his last few years alive, by his 80s Sean was doing really well, losing only around 1 inch of height from his peak.

Sean suited the role of Bond perfectly, yet his life as an actor was not as smooth sailing as one might think, with him once mentioning that:
