How Tall is Tom Hardy? + The Characters he Plays
Tom Hardy is a British actor who has had a highly successful career, starring in a diverse range of movies, from superhero films such as playing the character Bane in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), to Playing an MMA fighter in the film Warrior (2011), and also his upcoming role returning as Max Rockatansky in MadMax 2 (2023).
Regarding his height, he generally appears average on-screen, neither short nor tall. However, as we know, the cast, camera angles and lifted shoes can alter the height an actor can appear on screen, and is this the case with Hardy?
So let's investigate Tom's real height, by finding out his height claims, and comparing his height next to other celebs. We will also be looking into some of his character roles and how his height compares to their height on paper.
What is His Real Height?
Tom Hardy is comfortable with his height and doesn't wear lifted shoes at premiers, etc, or unless they are needed for acting roles. He wakes up in the mornings at 5'9.5" (176.5 cm), and stands somewhere in-between 5'9" (175.3 cm) and 5'9.25" (175.9 cm) throughout the majority of the day, never dipping below 5'9".
Tom Hardy's height is listed at 5'9" on Google and IMDb, and his weight is 75 kg, 165 lbs.
Tom Hardy is one of the few actors who is honest about his height and doesn't try to fake how tall he really is, like some other actors so. This is expressed through his height claims.
1: During a 2015 interview, and while laughing he mentioned that he is "not big enough to be The Punisher, I’m 5’9”. (1)
2: In an interview from Empire magazine in 2012, when asked about how he feels playing Bane, Hardy proceeds to say "Look, I appreciate that I am five-foot-nine and I weigh 185lbs wet-through with bricks in my pockets". (2)
3: Finally, in an interview for Esquire Magazine in 2014, Tom mentions "I'm a petit little bourgeois boy from London". (3)
Compared to Other Celebs
Let's compare Tom's height to some other celebs to gain a better understanding of his real height range.
Christian Bale 6'0" (182.9 cm)
Starring together in The Dark Knight films (2008-2012), and with both Hardy and Bale not prone to wearing lifted shoes at film Premieres, there are a good amount of photos where the pair are next to each other for height comparison.
For instance, at the Premiere of The Dark Knight Rises (2012) in both Manhattan and London there is a clear 3 inch difference between them in height. The 3 inch difference carries itself over in photo shoots for the film, too.
Therefore, next to Bale, Hardy looks to be 5'9" on the dot.
Leonado DiCaprio 5'11.25" (181 cm)
Starring together in the film The Revenant (2018) there looks to be slightly over a 2 inch difference between them in height, with Leo appearing taller.
For instance, at the BAFTA screening for the film in London, there appears to be a 2.25 inch difference, or the Premiere of the film in Hollywood, where the difference appears closer to 2 inches of height.
So when compared to Leo, Tom appears 5'9"-5'9.25" tall.
Joseph Gordon Levitt 5'9" (175.3 cm)
Starring together in the film Inception (2010), they are very close in height. For instance, at the Premiere of the film in London, you really can't tell their height apart, but Joseph has better posture.
In other examples such as the Premiere from The Dark Knight Rises in Manhatten, Joseph appears slightly shorter. Also, looking into some photos of them standing side-by-side in their younger days, Hardy appears taller, albeit by a fraction.
Therefore, when pictured with Joseph, Tom appears to be 5'9"-5'9.25" tall.
The Results - Compared to other celebs Tom Hardy appears between 5'9" and 5'9.25" tall.
Tom's Film Characters
As previously mentioned, in Tom's opinion, at 5'9" he is not big enough to play the character The Puinisher, who is 6'1" tall. Although, this hasn't previously stopped him from playing taller and larger characters in movies, as Esquire magazine mentions:
"Is he Bane? Is he the eponymous hero of Bronson? Is he big and scary? He is not. He is small, a few clicks under five ten, and the difference between him and his most famous cinematic incarnations makes him look shrunken". (3)
However, Tom's bulked-up physique has most likely compensated for his lack of height, helping him land roles playing larger and taller characters, as Empire magazine states:
"his physique is so imposing, we’re almost surprised our spine hasn’t snapped. Even so, he’s no monster". (2)
So, regardless of his average height, Tom Hardy is still a physically imposing man, and this has meant his acting roles have seen him playing vastly different characters throughout the years, both significantly taller and a little shorter than his 5'9" stature!
Some movies and characters include:
In the biographical crime film Bronson, Hardy portrayed the character of Charles Bronson 5'8.5" (174cm), which is a fairly accurate height match.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
In The Dark Knight Rises, Tom took the role of his tallest fictional character, as Bane 6'8" (203.2 cm) with hardy reportedly wearing 3 inch platform shoes to even things out a little!
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Starring alongside Charlize Theron In Mad Max: Fury Road, Tom played the fictional character of Max Rockatansky 5'9.5" (176.5 cm), who are both of a similar height.
Tom took on the role of playing the twins Ronald Kray and Reginald Kray, both 5'7.5" (171.5 cm), in the 2015 film Legend, being almost 2 inches taller than the infamous twins.
Although Tom was just a voice for the film, as the rest is CGI, he mentions here (watch from 1:22 onwards). that when needed for scenes in the film, a man who's "about 6 foot 8" fills Venom's position.
He does this by wearing a helmet with a steel bar with a tennis ball on top of it, and then walks around the room in a grey sock, standing in place of where the Marvel character venom would be, so the animators can paint him into the scene!
James Bond Candidate
As of 2022, Hardy is also in the running to play the character of James Bond, who stands at 6 feet tall, which is 3 inches taller than Hardy is in reality. The current shortest actor to play Bond was Daniel Craig 5'10" (177.8 cm).
The Bottom Line
After investigating Tom Hardy's height, I believe he wakes up at around 5'9.5 tall, dropping to somewhere between 5'9" and 5'9.25" throughout the day, and therefore to be safe, I will list his height at 5'9" (175.3 cm) tall on this page.
